Searching for Zomia #1: Tibeto-Burmese Shamanism
From 2000 till 2014 Laurent Jeanneau was based in South-East Asia recording the music, songs and rituals of traditional cultures rooted in the remote Hinterlands.
Those cultures who escaped the agricultural and social systems of the densely populated central valleys and plains of China, Laos and Thailand have kept their independence for centuries, protecting their beliefs and traditions against the dominant ethnic groups till very recently. In the past 20 years the growing interest in the ressources and the exploitation of those Hinterlands has lead to an ever increasing interference into the lives of those minorities. Some of the musical and cultural traditons presented here are no longer in existence.
Laurent Jeanneau will present in a series of 5 events the recordings he made in those historical areas of refuge which James Scott calls Zomia.
In “Searching for Zomia #1: Tibeto-Burmese Shamanism” he will talk about the specific dimensions of their spiritual beliefs widely called animism and by purpose uses the misleading term for what we easily in the western world call a Shaman, by introducing the Bima of the Hani , the Domsa of the Jingpaw, the Bimo of the Nisu in Yunnan-China or the Suni of the Nuosu in Sichuan-China, the priest of the Lisu in northern Thailand or the psychic healer of the Akha in northern Laos. They might call them priest, healer or trickster, they all have or had a function in their traditional environment, outside of the monotheist religions and inside Animism, superstition and super powers!

the musician and DIY music ethnographer Laurent Jeanneau presents his project Kink Gong. Since 1999, over many trips to Southeast Asia, Jeanneau has documented the local music traditions of ethnic minorities whose cultures are threatened by modernisation. Jeanneau collects and compiles these unedited recordings into an ever-growing sound and video archive. Excerpts of this archival work are published on the label Sublime Frequencies and his own label. In addition, Jeanneau uses these recordings, which focus mostly on vocal and percussion music, as the starting point for his own emotionally-charged electronic experiments and sound compositions then broadened by other field recordings. In these compositions, the traditions and avant-gardes of a diverse range of places merge into new, contemporary statements.
CTM Festival returns to HAU Hebbel am Ufer from 30 January to 7 February. The 17th edition’s music programme is elaborated through intensive collaboration with guest co-curator Rabih Beaini , while the exhibition and discourse programme is created in close collaboration with Swiss-based Norient . Special projects and commissions, as well as artists and sound cultures emanating from less familiar countries and localities and often operating on the fringes of the electronic circuit are featured in greater numbers than ever before. Under the shadow of a global conflict centered on increasingly radical disputes over drawing or dissolving borders, the festival’s “New Geographies” theme aims to explore music and sound practices that respond to these developments, and to provide the conceptual tools needed to approach the complexities of a polycentric, polychromatic, and increasingly hybrid (music) world with greater openness.

The idea of the event is about how artists and musicians assimilate and work around ‘exotic’, non-western elements and how they relate to the issue which goes with it — i.e. our view on the non-western world could be seen as intellectual suspicion, in the sense that if some uses the ‘exotic’, where can you draw the line with post-colonialism; can western musicians for instance sample fieldrecordings of polynesian tribes, societies in which music has a completely different function then here. I think there are a lot of good musicians who has their own way of working with these idea’s (musically and conceptual wise).
